Charting the way with the NZ Curriculum
“We can't keep doing what we've always done, or we'll end up having what we've always had.”

Derek Wenmoth

Following the various educational roles of teacher, principal, and lecturer in educational technology Derek took up his role as director of e-learning at CORE in April 2003. The role allows him to be involved in a wide range of e-learning activities from exploring innovative use of the latest technologies and researching e-learning practices, to helping establish policy and strategies to guide the implemenation of e-learning, both nationally and overseas. Derek’s role at CORE perfectly combines his passion for teaching and learning along with his long held fascination with the use of technologies in education.

Mary Anne Mills

Mary Anne Mills is the Curriculum Project leader for CORE Education. From 2003 - 2006 she was the Ministry of Education project manager for the redevelopment of the draft New Zealand curriculum.

Part of Mary Anne’s work at CORE involves working with school and cluster leaders designing school curriculum that reflects the future focus of the New Zealand curriculum.

Abstract

The introduction of the NZ Curriculum provides both challenges and opportunities for schools, but how do we take advantage of these? What does the landscape of opportunity look like, and how can we discover where we are on it in order to start?

This presentation will look at some of the big issues faced by schools and the limitations of pursuing traditional approaches to professional development for addressing the complexities of whole school development and change.

Many schools have experienced success through being able to have a clear grasp of the 'bigger picture', enabling them to strategically plan for how they address the more pragmatic and often urgent concerns. Attendees will be introduced to a web-based self-review tool designed to provide a data-driven, customised view of the 'big picture' for a school, and an overview of the types of strategies and development programmes that may be considered to move things forward.

Breakfast will be served at 7.45am, with Derek and Mary Anne beginning the discussion at 8.15am. They will wrap things up around 9.30am, but you are invited to stay and chat with Derek, Mary Anne, other CORE staff and one another after the seminar.
