eFellows’ projects enthuse

Projects using mobile phones in class, ICT to get kids away from ICT, mobile sensors, ePortfolios and blended learning enthused an audience of around 30 Christchurch teachers and administrators recently.

The 2008 eFellows gathered at CORE Education to present preliminary findings from their investigations into the use of different facets of ICT in education.

Introducing the eFellows, CORE Education Director Research Vince Ham said the five individuals were chosen for their exciting ICT teaching practice and had each received up to a year of teaching relief for their research and work with CORE Education.

Inglewood High School’s Michael Fenton kicked off with a multimedia presentation around portable mobile sensors and what they could achieve across many strands of the curriculum. Toni Twiss presented her thoughts on the controlled use of mobile phones in the classroom. Matt Tippen made sure everyone was wide awake by getting the audience engaged in one of his students’ energiser routines. Nick Rate from Palmerston North talked about the benefits of using ePortfolios as a way of engaging students and improving self-directed learning. And Mark Callagher from Wellington discussed using Moodle to increase student interactivity.
