o meet the growth in demand, CORE Education’s First Films is offering two film-making courses to the budding young film directors of Christchurch at Ferrymead Heritage Park this January. There will be one course for 12 – 15 year olds and one for 9 – 12 year olds.

  • 17 – 20th January 12 – 15 year olds
  • 24 – 27th January 9 – 12 year olds

CORE Education, the educational research and development organisation, based in Christchurch supports and promotes the effective use of new technologies in education. The First Films workshop gives young people a chance to learn through and with film production technology.

Each year First Films focuses on a particular film genre to encourage a positive group dynamic and ensure lots of variations on a theme for the final day’s screening. This year the students will get to hang out at the OK Corrale while making their own Western. They will be taken through all aspects of film production from brainstorming, storyboarding, filming and producing to editing and on the final day they can showcase their talents at a screening of their film.

“We thought it would be fun to re-create an old Western style film using the town of Ferrymead as a back drop for stories about goodies and baddies, cattle rustling, saloon brawls, railway high jinks and high noon gun fights and the like” CORE’s First Films coordinator, Kate Roberts explained.

Ferrymead provides a perfect ready-made film set, giving the kids great fodder to create their digital stories. Ferrymead, the Youth Heritage Trust and the Masons have generously agreed to donate the use of their premises for the course.

Facilitators for the courses are Mike Anderson, Paul Cathro, Paul Wilkinson, all qualified and highly experienced teachers who are passionate about giving kids an opportunity to learn about film-making.
