Breakfast at CORE Education

This morning, Mark Horgan, Senior Programme Advisor - Education Sector ICT from the Ministry of Education spent the morning at CORE Education speaking to local educators at a breakfast seminar.

Mark’s presentation focused on the issue of “Supporting learning in a connected sector through the smart use of ICT”. Mark provided an overview of Education Sector ICT, introducing the New Zealand ICT Strategic Framework for Education (http://www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/ictframework), and the development of foundation sector-wide shared ICT services. Despite the chilly Christchurch morning we had a great turnout, almost 30 people joined us for breakfast. We had a good mix of educators from primary to tertiary, the group was made up of principals, Board of Trustees members and Teachers in charge of ICT.

Education for Enterprise - a pilot project

Enterprising people will be at the centre of future global competitiveness. To prepare New Zealand for this future, we need our young people to be enterprising, critical and creative thinkers with a can-do attitude. 'Enterprise' is woven throughout the Vision and Principles of New Zealand’s new
Curriculum.

Anne-Marie Kite and Gina Revill, from CORE, spoke to an audience of both Industry and Education at last week’s breakfast seminar regarding an 'Education for Enterprise' pilot project. The scheme concentrated on enterprising thinking and attributes encouraging resilience, responsibility and problem solving in students within a real and authentic context.
The project assisted with:
• In-school support
• Linking business/community and education
• Exposing students to real world and purposeful learning

Enterprising attributes include:
• Problem solving
• Seeing and acting on opportunities
• Exploring ideas
• Being flexible
• Taking managed risks
• Persevering
• Taking responsibility

For further information about this project and advice on enterprise thinking in your school when implementing the New Zealand curriculum contact Anne-Marie Kite, annemarie.kite@core-ed.net or Gina Revill gina.revill@core-ed.net

eLearning XHTML editor, eXe, wins People's Choice award

The New Zealand-developed web editor may have missed out on the big awards at a major US education conference this year, but it ran away with the now-compulsory “People’s Choice” gong.

The eLearning XHTML editor (eXe), a tool for developing educational content for websites without the need to know web languages, was vying with other technologies at the Learning Impact conference in Austin, Texas. eXe won a consolation “learning impact leadership award” at the conference but also ran away with the People’s Choice award.

The eXe software is an environment for authoring web-based e-learning content and is freely available for Windows XP, Mac OS X, and Linux. It has been downloaded thousands of times and is available in more than two dozen language translations.
