Ali Hughes

Job Title:
General Manager

With Ali’s arrival at CORE the British contingent at the organisation has been strengthened, yet again! Born and bred in Hampshire, Southern England, Ali met and married her kiwi husband, Howard and moved to Christchurch with him twelve years ago. They have an eight-year-old son, Thomas who is a pupil at Windsor School in Christchurch, and who is already planning what he will study at university (if he is not an All Black by then).

Following her tertiary study (a BA History/English) Ali worked in secondary school teaching and school management in the UK. In New Zealand, Ali took up the role of Associate Registrar at CPIT and worked there for nine years, during which time she completed a post-graduate diploma in management. Ali brings a wealth of managerial and education experience to her role as general manager/CEO at CORE. For the past 4 years she has also been President of the NZ Branch of the Association of Tertiary Education Managers (ATEM), which continues her close links with tertiary education in Australasia. She also Chairman of the Board of Trustees at her son's school. Ali is also an Associate Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management and a Member of the Institute of Directors.

National facilitator team leader - ECE ICT PL

Coming to CORE in January 2006 with a wealth of experience in the early childhood education sector, Ann will be leading the ECE ICTPL contract for CORE. In the last five years Ann has seen the power of new technologies to make a positive difference in the lives of children, their families, and teachers in the work she has done with ECE Centres. Derek Wenmoth

Photo:

Job Title:
Director, e-learning

Derek has been involved with CORE since it’s inception in 2003. Derek, Nick Billowes, and Vince Ham set up Ultralab South (now CORE) – which was to embody their vision of an e-learning research and development centre.

Following the various educational roles of teacher, principal, and lecturer in educational technology Derek took up his role as director of e-learning in April 2003. The role allows him to be involved in a wide range of e-learning activities from exploring innovative use of the latest technologies and researching e-learning practices, to helping establish policy and strategies to guide the implemenation of e-learning, both nationally and overseas.

Derek’s role at CORE perfectly combines his passion for teaching and learning along with his long held fascination with the use of technologies in education. After convincing his wife he needed a computer – as that was where the future of education would lie - Derek bought his first one shortly after getting married. This was back in the days when you had to use tapes to load programmes and when mobile phones were the size and weight of a brick.

Married to Jane, Derek keeps himself busy on the home front with five children ranging in age from 7 to 23. When not busy with family, blogging, and CORE, Derek enjoys getting outdoors – especially tramping. He boasts that he has tramped in all of the national parks and covered most of the major tracks and walkways in New Zealand.

Elaine Newton

Photo:

Job Title:
ECE ICT PL facilitator

As a former teacher of new entrant children Elaine is in the perfect position to appreciate the opportunities for ICTs in early childhood education. Elaine spent nine years teaching at Westmere School in Auckland before winning a Ministry of Education eFellowship award for 2006. Her research during this “sabbatical “ year investigated what children know about ICTs and whether new entrant teachers use that knowledge in their classroom programmes.

Elaine has enormous enthusiasm for finding ways to increase children’s engagement in learning, and giving them the opportunity to “show off” their expertise. She says, “ I am convinced that we need to find ways for learning to be fun and challenging”.

Gwenny Davis

Photo:

Job Title:
Conference manager

The stress and chaos that can come with event management is no obstacle for this organisational dynamo.  Gwenny’s eagle eye for detail combined with exceptional organisational skills, honed over many years on the educational event circuit, make her a perfect match for the job. Many wonder how conferences such as Navcon2k4, ULearn05, Learning@School, and He Waka Eke Noa 'happen'; they need look no further than Gwenny’s 11-acre property in Nelson where she brings the many components of each event together and does just that – with a little help from the other members of the event committee.

After graduating "decades ago” in sociology and French at Victoria University, Gwenny spent many years as president and office manager for the Maruia Society. The society has since undergone a couple of name changes from the Native Forests Action Council to the present name of the Ecologic Foundation and has been responsible for the protection of millions of acres of publicly-owned native forests in New Zealand.

Bringing two boys into the world put a pause on all that and once they were in primary school, Gwenny launched her own business with Janet Matheson in Nelson called Conferences & Events Ltd.  With plenty of event management experience behind her Gwenny began working with Nick Billowes in 1999 and now works exclusively for CORE Education on ICT PD conferences.

Gwenny has lived on the same property on the outskirts of Nelson since arriving from Cornwall in 1962.  She has planted thousands of trees and is still planting.  When not organising conferences, Gwenny plays violin in the Nelson Symphony Orchestra and is currently learning to tango.

Sherry Chrisp

Job Title:
Team leader - ICT PD

Given her mammoth task of coordinating the ICT PD Clusters programme facilitation team it’s lucky Sherry, by her own admission, is a  “creative type, tempered with a bit of realism, and a splash of order”. Mind you from all accounts, Sherry enjoys her job so much she hardly considers it working. As she says, “the role I have is so varied, I get to work with lots of wonderful people, organise some wonderful events, see people grow in their roles, and create exciting opportunities ... who wouldn’t love it?”

Sherry has teaching in her blood, as they say. Growing up in a teaching family she lived in various locales around New Zealand and also experienced life in Western Samoa. With the standard occupational choice for women at the time being teaching or nursing, Sherry opted for the former partly influenced by her distaste for wearing uniforms of any description.

Tessa Gray

Job Title:
National facilitator primary - ICT PD

Tessa took up her role with CORE Education in January 2006. Her primary teaching experience has spanned inner-city London and New Zealand in both classroom and specialist art teaching. Taking her commitment to art teaching further, Tessa worked on the Ministry of Education Arts Contract as a visual art facilitator. Soon after that, she worked as ICT adviser for the University of Waikato.

Tessa believes that professional learning in a knowledge-based age is fundamental in ensuring that students reach their maximum potential to become life-long learners in the 21st century. This means assisting facilitators/leaders to develop skills and strategies for implementing effective practice while at the same time, challenging others to reflect and improve on their current teaching practice. The changes in Web 2.0 have made a profound impact on our learning environments and finally the artist, designer, publisher is on a global stage.

Vince Ham

Photo:

Job Title:
Director, research

Vince was one of the foundation staff at CORE education when it opened as Ultralab South on 1 April, 2003. Vince came to CORE steeped in teaching and education, having clocked up 16 years in teacher education and research at Christchurch College of Education and (briefly) the University of Canterbury. Prior to this he was the History HOD at Nelson College for Girls.

Most often referred to by different personality types to his at CORE as its ‘absent-minded professor’, Vince fills his weeks developing, conducting, and writing up research projects for CORE.

“Too old to rock and roll and much too young to die” (as the song goes), Vince spends his weekends variously working in the garden, playing soccer, going to movies, ‘doing up’ houses, or drinking specialist citrus teas at Christchurch’s finest cafes, depending on the season and the weather du jour.
